October Was A Scream!

I took down our skeletons and candy corn yesterday, and debated whether or not to go with pilgrims or boughs of holly (the pilgrims and turkeys won out for the time being…although they will soon have to share their spotlight with some Christmas decor…I can only fight my natural urges for so long). As you are undoubtedly aware, I love this time of year. October is pretty much a kickoff month for a season of fun and festivities, and this year was a great one. Even though we sadly had to miss two costume parties, I still I may have reached a personal record for costume changes, which just means there is still room for even more. October was a real scream!

Fall means football season, and spending Saturdays in the company of our Clemson family. Win or lose, we always have the best time.

We had an extra special tailgate this month with a send-off for our friend Bill, who is deployed with the National Guard to Kuwait for the next ten months.

And some of our fun Charlotte friends joined us in Clemson as well. Tiger paws are always the perfect accessory.

Clemson weekends are hard to beat. (Unlike my football team this season).

Adding to the fun of the month, it was spirit week at my gym. Things started off slowly with Crazy Sock Day…

By mid-week, it was Decades Day and time to get into my best ‘90s fashion.

I made some healthy treat bags for my workout class. We were encouraged to wear Halloween costumes as long as we could still workout in them, SO…

Who’s ready to sweat to the oldies? Richard Simmons is here for it!

I have to say, the scrunchie and fanny pack on Decades Day, and then the short-shorts and fabulous wig on Halloween morning had me off to quite a start. And then it was time for the main event! Our neighborhood hosts a pizza party, costume contest, and then all the kids leave in a big group to trick-or-treat together, so it is the perfect way to enjoy Halloween and get into the spirit of the occasion. Naturally, we try to come up with a family costume each year, and this time, we got lots of laughs, even if the dogs were not exactly thrilled with their outfits.

“This is my circus, and these are my monkeys!”

Charlie and George toddling around as monkeys received no shortage of attention and we posed for quite a few photos, even from strangers driving by! Clint was also a great sport as the strong man. We made a lap through the neighborhood, then handed out all our candy, and freed our monkeys from their costumes for the evening (they were exhausted). Our neighbors down the street, always the hosts with the most, invited us over for a post-trick-or-treat nightcap, which was too good an offer to refuse.

Just hanging with Hank the mummy.

Cozy cocktails on Halloween eve; the perfect way to close out October. This month was a total treat!

Fa-BOO-lous!

Spooky season is finally here, and it’s one of my most favorite times of the year—so we decided to get festive. We got out our skeleton crew and went a little creative this time, and I think the results were pretty fun. As I have stressed to our friends and neighbors, this little scene is NOT art imitating life; it is pure fiction. To kick off your Halloween revelry, let me show you the scene taking place at Chateau de Chaos this fall:

He’s got his yard work to do, and she is enjoying a well-deserved break in her lounge chair. This seems like the way the world should work.

Bone Mower is keeping things looking tidy in the yard.

Meanwhile, Suzanne Skelebaker is taking the afternoon off while her trusty guard dogs keep watch.

She’s taking a break from Garden & Gun in favor of Goblin & Ghoul (more seasonal ideas in the October issue, we hear). Is it horrible that I want to borrow Suzanne’s muumuu?

Did I mention we light up at night? (But of course).

We took our skeleton theme right up to the front door with this fun wreath. I dare say, we are ready for the tricks and treats of the season!

We have had lots of passersby, kids walking into the display, photos being snapped, and quite a bit of fun already, which was our ultimate goal. Life is too short to be taken seriously—no bones about it. Happy October!
